New combo aims to shrink lung tumors before surgery

NCT ID NCT04933903

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether giving low-dose radiation along with two immunotherapy drugs (ipilimumab and nivolumab) before surgery can shrink tumors in people with stage IB to III non-small cell lung cancer. About 25 participants will receive the combination, then undergo surgery. The main goal is to see how many patients have a major or complete tumor response. The study also monitors safety and looks at immune markers in blood and tissue.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ipilimumab, Nivolumab, and low-dose stereotactic body radiation therapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could improve tumor shrinkage before surgery, potentially leading to better outcomes for lung cancer patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 25 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The combination of drugs and radiation carries risks of serious side effects.
