Shining a light on a common ICU challenge: new device aims to make IV insertion easier

NCT ID NCT06234293

Summary

This study tested whether a near-infrared light device helps nurses insert IV lines on the first try in intensive care patients. Critically ill patients often have swollen arms, making it hard to see or feel veins for IV access. Researchers compared the light device, which makes veins glow under the skin, to the traditional method of feeling for veins. They measured which method led to more successful first attempts and fewer needle sticks.
