Major trial questions need for routine lymph node removal in breast cancer
NCT ID NCT04303715
First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study looks at whether women with early-stage breast cancer (tumors under 5 cm) and no signs of cancer in lymph nodes on ultrasound can safely avoid sentinel lymph node biopsy during breast-conserving surgery. About 1,734 women are randomly assigned to either skip the biopsy or have it as usual. The goal is to see if skipping this step leads to similar long-term outcomes, such as cancer returning, while reducing side effects like arm swelling.
