NCT ID NCT06740305

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study aims to improve safety for astronauts during spacewalks by testing a method to prevent decompression sickness, also known as "the bends." Twelve healthy volunteers, ages 18 to 50, will breathe pure oxygen for 6 hours and then spend 6 hours in a low-pressure chamber to simulate space conditions. Researchers will monitor for gas bubbles in the blood and any symptoms of decompression sickness, with immediate treatment available if needed.
