New MRI test could spot troubled placentas without needles

NCT ID NCT02238301

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 14, 2026 · Updated 35 times

Summary

This study tested whether functional MRI can detect placental problems in pregnant women without invasive procedures. Researchers gave 101 pregnant women oxygen while scanning the placenta and fetus to see if the MRI signal changed. The goal was to tell the difference between healthy babies and those with intrauterine growth restriction, a condition where the baby doesn't grow as expected.
