Could a VR headset replace the 6-Minute walk test for diabetes patients?
NCT ID NCT07649967
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether mixed reality (using a Meta Quest 3 headset) can reliably measure walking ability, balance, and leg strength in people with type 2 diabetes. Researchers will compare the digital versions of three common physical tests (6-minute walk, timed up and go, and sit-to-stand) with the traditional versions. If the mixed reality tests prove accurate, they could offer a more convenient and standardized way to monitor patients, possibly even from home.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Mixed reality-based functional performance assessment using Meta Quest 3
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a more standardized, digital way to assess mobility and function in people with type 2 diabetes, potentially enabling remote monitoring.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage validation study (75 participants) focused on measurement accuracy, not treatment. The technology may not work well for all patients or replace traditional tests.

Inclusion Criteria: * Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by a physician, * Aged between 18 and 65 years, * Ability to ambulate independently without the use of an assistive device, * No participation in a structured exercise program within the previous 6 months, * Cognitive ability sufficient to understand and follow test instructions, * Visual, auditory, and vestibular functions sufficient to tolerate mixed reality applications, * Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions in Turkish, * Willingness to participate voluntarily in the study and provision of written informed consent. Exclusion Criteria: * Presence of proliferative diabetic retinopathy or severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, * Advanced peripheral neuropathy, active foot ulcer, Charcot foot, or significant sensory loss that may compromise safe test performance, * Presence of peripheral arterial disease, * Advanced renal failure, requirement for dialysis, or nephropathy that may compromise exercise safety, * Myocardial infarction within the previous 6 months, * Unstable ischemic heart disease or uncontrolled angina, * Resting blood pressure greater than 160/100 mmHg, * Presence of severe musculoskeletal, neurological, or vestibular disorders that may interfere with safe test performance, * High risk of balance loss or spatial disorientation in the mixed reality environment due to visual, auditory, or balance impairments, * Cognitive, behavioral, or compliance-related problems that may prevent completion of the study procedures.
