Smartphone prompts timed to mood may boost quitting efforts
NCT ID NCT04376489
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Sep 01, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This trial tests whether sending tailored smartphone messages at moments of high vulnerability (negative mood and cigarette availability) can help smokers engage with quitting strategies. About 114 current smokers motivated to quit will receive up to six prompts per day for ten days, comparing no prompt, low-effort tips, or more effortful strategies. The goal is to see if timing messages to a person's state makes them more likely to use the advice.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- smartphone-delivered behavioral prompts tailored to mood and cigarette availability
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this approach could make quitting aids more effective by delivering the right support at the right moment.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study focused on engagement, not quitting success. The prompts may not help everyone, and results may not apply to all smokers.
