Radioactive tracer helps surgeons see hidden brain tumors
NCT ID NCT06377371
First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 16 times
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a radioactive tracer called [Cu64]DOTATATE, combined with a handheld gamma probe, can help surgeons find meningioma tumors during surgery. Twenty adults with suspected or recurrent meningioma will receive the tracer before surgery, and the probe will measure radioactivity in the tumor and nearby tissue. The goal is to see if this technique improves the chances of removing the entire tumor.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
[Cu64]DOTATATE (radioactive tracer)
What this could lead to
If successful, this technique could help surgeons remove meningiomas more completely during surgery, potentially reducing the need for repeat operations.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The tracer and probe may not reliably distinguish tumor from healthy tissue.
