NCT ID NCT04335968

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving melatonin (a natural sleep hormone) to patients aged 70 and older can prevent delirium—sudden confusion—after surgery for a broken hip or leg. 357 participants received either melatonin or a placebo pill nightly from before surgery until 5 days after. The goal was to see if melatonin reduces the number of patients who become confused in the first 10 days after surgery.
