Measles vaccine may cut child deaths by 50% – study tests new policy

NCT ID NCT01306006

First seen Feb 15, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tested whether changing the national vaccine policy in Guinea-Bissau to give measles shots to all children up to 3 years old (instead of stopping at 12 months) could lower death rates. About 3,500 children aged 9-35 months who had not yet received the measles vaccine took part. Researchers compared the usual policy with a 'vaccine for all' approach to see if the extra doses reduced deaths and hospital visits.
