New study aims to replace painful liver biopsies with simple blood and ultrasound tests

NCT ID NCT07172997

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study looks at 163 obese adults having weight-loss surgery to find better, non-invasive ways to diagnose and monitor a common liver condition called MASLD (fatty liver disease). Researchers will also search for blood markers that can predict if type 2 diabetes will go away after surgery. Participants give blood and have ultrasound scans before surgery and at 6 and 12 months after, helping to build a scoring system that could replace the need for a liver biopsy.
