Scientists deliberately infect volunteers to fight malaria

NCT ID NCT05071079

Summary

This study aims to find a safe and reliable way to give healthy volunteers a controlled, mild malaria infection. Researchers will infect up to 48 healthy Thai adults with a specific type of malaria parasite (P. vivax) using frozen, infected blood cells. The goal is to create a standard model that can be used in the future to test new malaria vaccines and drugs quickly and safely. All volunteers will be closely monitored in a hospital and given a full cure as soon as the infection is detected.
