New study aims to Fine-Tune ventilator care for critically ill lung patients

NCT ID NCT06536543

First seen Jan 18, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study involves 20 adults with severe lung failure (ARDS) who are on a breathing machine. Researchers will use a special imaging tool called electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to measure how much the lungs are overstretched or collapsed when changing ventilator pressure. The goal is to find the best pressure setting that balances lung opening and overstretching, especially when patients are lying on their stomach (prone position). This is an observational study that does not test a new treatment, but aims to improve how ventilators are managed.
