Summary

This study tests whether home-based breathing exercises and stationary bike workouts can improve lung health in 200 current and former smokers aged 50 and older. Participants will use a handheld breathing device and a stationary bike for 12 weeks. The goal is to see if these exercises are practical and can strengthen breathing muscles, potentially reducing lung cancer risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
respiratory muscle training and aerobic exercise
What this could lead to
If this works, it could point toward a simple, home-based exercise program to improve lung health and potentially lower lung cancer risk in smokers.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not on proving cancer prevention. The exercises may not be effective, and results may not apply to all smokers.
