Radioactive drug aims to shrink aggressive prostate tumors before surgery
NCT ID NCT06798558
First seen Feb 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This Phase II trial is testing whether a single dose of Lu-177-PSMA-617 (Pluvicto), a radioactive drug that targets prostate cancer cells, can shrink or downstage high-risk prostate tumors before surgical removal. Fifty-four men with aggressive prostate cancer (Gleason score 8 or higher) and a positive PSMA scan will receive the drug before radical prostatectomy. The main goal is to see if the tumor is less advanced after treatment, with hopes of improving long-term outcomes.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Lu-177-PSMA-617 (Pluvicto), a radioactive drug that targets prostate cancer cells
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new way to shrink aggressive prostate tumors before surgery, potentially improving outcomes and reducing recurrence risk.
What could go wrong
This is a small Phase II trial (54 people) with no control group, so results may not be conclusive. The drug is radioactive and may cause side effects like fatigue, dry mouth, or blood cell changes.
