Could immune cell therapy free liver transplant patients from lifelong drugs?
NCT ID NCT03577431
First seen May 10, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This early-phase study tests whether specially trained immune cells (called Tregs) can help liver transplant recipients safely reduce or stop their anti-rejection drugs. Nine participants receive the cell therapy and are monitored for side effects and whether they can maintain a healthy liver without standard medication. The goal is to see if this approach can achieve 'operational tolerance'—a state where the body accepts the new liver without needing lifelong drugs.
