First seen Mar 30, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 12 times
Summary
This study will test whether low-dose CT scans can help find lung cancer early in high-risk smokers aged 50-79 in Hong Kong. About 15,000 participants will be randomly assigned to receive three rounds of CT scans or usual care. The main goal is to see if screening reduces lung cancer deaths over up to 10 years.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that regular low-dose CT scans help catch lung cancer early and save lives in high-risk smokers.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but has not started yet. It may find that screening does not significantly reduce lung cancer deaths, or it may lead to false alarms and unnecessary procedures.
