World-First larynx transplant trial aims to give voice back to 3 patients

NCT ID NCT02821299

First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tests larynx (voice box) transplants in 3 adults who have permanently lost the ability to speak, breathe on their own, or swallow due to severe injury. The goal is to restore these functions using a donor larynx. Because the body may reject the new organ, patients must take lifelong anti-rejection medication. The study is currently recruiting.
