Can a drug combo stop Post-Surgery brain fog in seniors?

NCT ID NCT07627906

First seen Jun 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tests whether two different drug mixtures—ketofol (ketamine plus propofol) and ketodex (ketamine plus dexmedetomidine)—can prevent postoperative delirium (sudden confusion) in elderly patients after open cancer surgery in the pelvis or abdomen. The trial will enroll 180 people aged 60 and older and compare how many develop delirium within two hours after surgery. The goal is to find a safer anesthesia option that reduces brain complications in this high-risk group.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ketofol (ketamine and propofol mixture) and ketodex (ketamine and dexmedetomidine mixture)

What this could lead to

If one combination works better, it could point to a safer way to prevent confusion and memory problems after major cancer surgery in older adults.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 180 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Both drug combos have side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate, and the study is still recruiting.
