Which contrast agent gives clearer heart artery images?
NCT ID NCT05065073
First seen Aug 19, 2026 · Last updated Aug 20, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two types of contrast agents used during optical coherence tomography (OCT), a test that takes detailed pictures of the heart's arteries. The study will see if one agent uses less contrast, produces clearer images, and causes fewer heart rhythm changes than the other. Adults with coronary artery disease who are already scheduled for OCT will be randomly assigned to receive either the iso-osmolar or low-osmolar contrast agent.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Iodixanol (iso-osmolar contrast) and Iohexol (low-osmolar contrast)
- What this could lead to
- If one contrast agent works better, it could make OCT imaging safer and more efficient for people with coronary artery disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, so results may not apply broadly. The study focuses on imaging details, not long-term patient outcomes.
