Islet transplant breakthrough: could free type 1 diabetics from insulin shots?
NCT ID NCT00679042
First seen Apr 07, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 6 times
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether transplanting insulin-making cells (islets) from donors can help people with type 1 diabetes achieve near-normal blood sugar without dangerous lows. 21 adults with severe hypoglycemia episodes received the transplant plus lifelong immune-suppressing drugs. The goal was an HbA1c of 6.5% or less and no severe low blood sugar events one year later.
