New PET scan could help thyroid cancer patients avoid ineffective treatment

NCT ID NCT03647358

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study is testing a new type of PET scan that uses a special radioactive form of iodine called iodine-124. The scan measures how much radioactive iodine the cancer absorbs, which helps doctors decide if standard radioiodine therapy will work. If the scan shows low uptake, doctors may recommend a different treatment. The study involves 60 adults with thyroid cancer that has spread.
