New nasal test could spot hidden viruses in seniors

NCT ID NCT07601412

First seen May 24, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026

Summary

This study aims to improve diagnosis of respiratory viral infections in elderly patients by measuring a natural immune response (type I interferon) in the nose, rather than testing for each virus separately. Researchers will collect samples from over 1,100 older adults in geriatric wards and compare the immune marker to standard PCR tests. The goal is to reduce missed or incorrect diagnoses and help guide better care and isolation decisions.
