Blood test may predict which back pain patients can skip surgery
NCT ID NCT07367503
First seen Feb 02, 2026 · Last updated May 18, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study looked at 130 people with lumbar disc herniation (slipped disc) to see if a blood-based measure called the Systemic Immune-Inflammatory Index (SIII) could help predict which discs might shrink on their own. Researchers compared patients who had surgery with those who received only medical treatment. The goal was to understand if inflammation levels in the blood are linked to natural healing, which could one day help doctors decide who needs surgery and who does not.
