Brain surgery gets a GPS: new tech aims to make critical drain placement safer
NCT ID NCT03696043
Summary
This study tested whether using a special imaging guidance system could improve the placement of external ventricular drains (EVDs)—tubes used to relieve dangerous pressure in the brain. Researchers compared the standard 'freehand' method to a new technique using real-time image guidance, hoping it would lead to more accurate placement with fewer attempts and complications. The trial involved 31 adult patients who needed this urgent procedure due to conditions like head trauma or bleeding.
