Brain surgery gets a GPS: new tech aims for safer drain placement

NCT ID NCT03696043

Summary

This study tested whether using a real-time image guidance system could improve the placement of a tube (called an external ventricular drain or EVD) used to relieve pressure in the brain. Researchers compared the new guided method to the standard 'freehand' technique in 31 patients needing this urgent procedure. The goal was to see if the guided system led to more accurate placement on the first try and fewer complications like bleeding.
