First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study tested two drugs, hydroxyurea and metformin, in 96 people with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia to see if they could reduce the need for blood transfusions. Participants took one of the drugs daily for a year. Researchers measured changes in fetal hemoglobin and transfusion frequency, and also looked at quality of life and genetic factors. The goal was to find a safer, effective way to manage the disease.
