Could a malaria drug help kids with rare lung disease?

NCT ID NCT03822780

First seen Mar 21, 2026 · Last updated May 18, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looked at whether hydroxychloroquine, a medicine used for malaria and autoimmune conditions, can help children with a rare genetic lung disease that affects surfactant—a substance that keeps lungs open. 25 children with confirmed genetic mutations took the drug, and doctors checked if their oxygen needs improved over 6 months. The goal was to see if the drug could control the disease, not cure it.
