First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tested a dental device called a hybrid rapid maxillary expander, sometimes combined with tiny bone perforations (MOPs), to widen the upper jaw in adults aged 17-23. Fourteen people with a narrow upper jaw and crossbite took part. The goal was to see if the bone holes helped achieve more expansion with less discomfort.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hybrid rapid maxillary expander assisted with micro-osteo perforation (MOPs)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a more effective way to widen the upper jaw in adults, potentially reducing the need for more invasive surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very small study with only 14 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure involves intentional bone perforations, which carry risks like pain, swelling, or infection.
