Sitting all day may sabotage your workout, study finds

NCT ID NCT06301243

First seen Feb 20, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looked at how a day of inactivity (less than 5,000 steps) affects the way muscles burn fat and carbohydrates during and after exercise. Eleven healthy adults completed one day of low activity and one day of normal activity, then biked for an hour. Researchers took blood and muscle samples to measure energy use and gene activity. The goal is to understand why some people get less benefit from exercise after sitting too much.
