Breathing training may cut hospital returns for COPD patients

Summary
This study tests whether a home-based breathing exercise program can help people with COPD avoid being readmitted to the hospital or dying after a severe flare-up. About 358 adults who were hospitalized for at least 3 days due to a COPD attack will either receive usual care or add daily breathing muscle training using a smartphone app. The goal is to see if this simple training improves breathing strength, quality of life, and reduces the need for future hospital stays.
