HIV pill swap may shrink belly fat, but study halted early
NCT ID NCT01420523
First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study tested whether switching to a two-drug combination (raltegravir plus maraviroc) could reduce belly fat in people with HIV whose virus was already well-controlled. It included 48 adults who had been on HIV treatment for at least 5 years. The goal was to see if the new regimen kept the virus undetectable while improving lipohypertrophy (excess belly fat). The study was terminated early, so results are limited.
