A stronger nicotine patch might break the dual Smoking-Vaping habit
NCT ID NCT07754578
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests whether higher doses of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help adults who use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes quit both products. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either standard-dose NRT, augmented-dose NRT, or no NRT, with all groups getting behavioral support. The study measures whether people achieve biochemically confirmed abstinence from both products at 12 and 24 weeks, and also looks at DNA damage biomarkers related to tobacco use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nicotine replacement therapy (nicotine patch and lozenge) at standard or augmented doses, plus behavioral support
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could establish a more effective way to help people quit both cigarettes and e-cigarettes, potentially lowering cancer risk and improving long-term health.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is in Phase 2, so results are preliminary. Higher doses may cause more side effects, and quitting both products is challenging, so success rates may be modest.
