Could a simple scan replace biopsies for breast cancer?
NCT ID NCT05923268
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new radioactive imaging agent that binds to the HER2 protein, which is important for guiding breast cancer treatment. Ten women with known HER2-positive or HER2-negative breast cancer received one injection of the agent, followed by several SPECT scans over 24 hours. The goal was to see if the scan could accurately show HER2 levels in tumors, potentially offering a non-invasive way to determine HER2 status.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Technetium-99m-labelled designed ankyrin repeat protein ([99mTc]Tc-G3-(G3S)3C)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a non-invasive way to determine HER2 status in breast cancer, potentially reducing the need for biopsies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early imaging study with only 10 participants. It is not designed to prove treatment benefit, and the agent may not accurately distinguish HER2-positive from HER2-negative tumors in larger, more diverse groups.
