New scan could reveal breast cancer type without a needle
NCT ID NCT05923177
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early study tested a new radioactive imaging agent, called [123I] I-(HE)3-G3, to see if it can safely detect HER2 protein in breast cancer tumors using SPECT scans. Ten people with either HER2-positive or HER2-negative breast cancer received one injection and were scanned over 48 hours. The goal was to measure how the agent spreads in the body and whether it can tell HER2-positive from HER2-negative tumors, potentially offering a non-invasive way to determine cancer type.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Iodine-123-labelled designed ankyrin repeat proteins HE3-G3 ([123I] I-(HE)3-G3)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a new imaging method to see HER2 status in breast cancer without needing a biopsy.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early, small Phase 1 study with only 10 people. It only tests if the imaging agent is safe and can be seen on scans, not if it improves outcomes.
