Penicillin break: major trial tests if kids with mild RHD can stop lifelong shots

NCT ID NCT07146048

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looks at whether children and teens (ages 5-20) with mild rheumatic heart disease can stop taking monthly penicillin shots or pills without their heart condition getting worse. All 922 participants have already been on penicillin for at least 2 years and have stable or normal heart scans. Half will stop penicillin and half will continue, and researchers will compare heart changes after 2 years.
