Could diabetes drugs also protect kidneys by fixing fat?

NCT ID NCT07309094

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study looks at whether GLP-1 drugs, used for diabetes and weight loss, can improve kidney health in people with chronic kidney disease. Researchers will measure changes in fat around the kidneys and heart, as well as kidney function. The goal is to see if these drugs reduce harmful fat-related inflammation that worsens kidney damage.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide, tirzepatide) and SGLT2 inhibitors (dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, canagliflozin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that GLP-1 drugs improve kidney health by reducing harmful fat around organs, pointing toward a better way to manage chronic kidney disease.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with 250 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The drugs can cause side effects like nausea or stomach issues, and it's unclear if they will directly slow kidney damage.
