DNA test could stop deadly drug reactions for gout patients

This study aims to prevent severe, life-threatening skin reactions in people with gout who are starting a common medication called allopurinol. Researchers will test patients for a specific gene (HLA-B58:01) that increases the risk of these dangerous reactions. Patients with the gene will receive a different, safer medication (febuxostat), while those without the gene can safely take allopurinol. The study will follow 228 Vietnamese adults for one year to see if this genetic screening approach is effective and cost-effective.
