Genetic screen could stop deadly drug reactions for gout patients

NCT ID NCT07369622

Summary

This study aims to prevent severe, life-threatening skin reactions in people starting a common gout medication called allopurinol. Researchers will test patients for a specific gene (HLA-B58:01) that increases their risk of these dangerous reactions. Patients with the gene will receive a different, safer medication (febuxostat), while those without the gene will take allopurinol. The study will compare this genetic testing approach to standard care to see if it is effective, safe, and cost-effective.
