First seen Dec 29, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study looked at how gastric bypass surgery changes the bacteria in the small intestine. Researchers measured hydrogen in the breath of 51 people with severe obesity before surgery and at several points up to two years after. The goal was to find out how often bacterial overgrowth happens and how it relates to digestion and nutrient absorption.
