Balloon in the womb: new hope for babies with a rare birth defect

NCT ID NCT05450653

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tests a procedure called FETO, where a tiny balloon is placed in the windpipe of a fetus with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The balloon blocks the airway temporarily, which helps the lungs grow larger before birth. The goal is to improve the baby's chance of survival after delivery. Ten pregnant women will be enrolled to see if the balloon can be safely placed and removed.
