Balloon in the womb: new hope for babies with rare birth defect

NCT ID NCT04583644

First seen Jan 30, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tests a procedure called FETO for unborn babies with a severe form of left congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), where the diaphragm has a hole and the lungs are underdeveloped. The procedure involves placing a tiny balloon in the baby's windpipe to block fluid flow, which stretches the lungs and helps them grow before birth. The trial will enroll 10 pregnant women to see if the balloon can be placed safely and effectively.
