Pioneering womb surgery aims to save babies with severe lung defect

NCT ID NCT00881660

Summary

This study tested a fetal surgery procedure called FETO for babies with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a life-threatening condition where organs push into the chest and prevent lung growth. Doctors temporarily placed a tiny balloon in the baby's windpipe while still in the womb to help the lungs develop, aiming to improve survival chances after birth. The study involved 20 pregnancies and checked if the procedure was feasible and safe for both mother and baby.
