New study aims to catch type 1 diabetes early in family members

NCT ID NCT07322380

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study will test a screening program for type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 1,000 adult relatives of people with T1D in Quebec. Participants will have blood tests to check for autoantibodies that signal early T1D risk. Those who test positive will be offered follow-up monitoring through either a central clinic or their own doctor. The goal is to see if such a screening program is practical and acceptable.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a practical screening program to identify people at risk for type 1 diabetes early, allowing for monitoring and potential future prevention.

What could go wrong

This is a feasibility study, not a treatment trial. It only tests whether screening and follow-up are practical, not whether they improve health outcomes. Results may not apply outside Quebec.
