New rule could cut unnecessary brain scans in seniors after falls
NCT ID NCT06525727
First seen Jan 22, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 15 times
Summary
This study checked how well a new rule works to decide if older adults (65+) who have fallen need a head CT to look for brain bleeding. Only about 5% of these patients actually have bleeding, but it can be serious. The goal was to see if the rule can safely avoid unnecessary CT scans. Researchers studied 800 patients in the emergency department to validate the rule's accuracy.
