New MRI technique may prevent facial paralysis during brain tumor removal
NCT ID NCT04057976
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study tested a new MRI method called diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) to map the facial nerve before surgery for vestibular schwannoma, a benign brain tumor. The facial nerve controls facial movement and is at risk during tumor removal. 38 adult patients received an extra 10-minute MRI scan before their surgery. The goal was to see if the scan could accurately show the nerve's position, which could help surgeons avoid injuring it.
