Can exercise improve sleep for people with HIV? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT04946994

First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026

Summary

This study looked at how two types of exercise—high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and continuous moderate exercise (CME)—affect sleep and inflammation in older adults with HIV. Fifty-two participants were assigned to one of the two exercise programs for 16 weeks. Researchers measured sleep quality through surveys and wrist devices, and checked blood for inflammation markers. The goal was to see if HIIT leads to better sleep and lower inflammation than moderate exercise.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

exercise (high-intensity interval training and continuous moderate-intensity exercise)

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could show that specific exercise programs improve sleep and reduce inflammation in older adults with HIV, pointing toward better health strategies.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 52 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It also relies on self-reported sleep quality, which can be subjective.
