Sound waves target Parkinson's tremors in new trial

NCT ID NCT03454425

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tested a treatment called ExAblate subthalomotomy for people with Parkinson's disease whose motor symptoms (like tremor and stiffness) were not well controlled on one side of the body. The treatment uses focused ultrasound to target a small area in the brain. 36 participants were randomly assigned to receive either the real treatment or a sham (fake) procedure. The main goal was to see if the treatment improved motor symptoms more than the sham, and to check for side effects.
