First seen May 20, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether filling dialysis catheters with a 60% ethanol (alcohol) solution could prevent serious infections in critically ill patients with acute kidney failure. Over 1,400 adults in intensive care units took part, receiving either the ethanol lock or a placebo. The goal was to see if this simple approach reduces catheter-related bloodstream infections during their ICU stay.
