Which supplement cuts liver fat best? new trial aims to find out.
NCT ID NCT07194863
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test two supplements — essential phospholipid and betaine HCL/L-glutamic acid — in 200 adults with metabolic fatty liver disease (MAFLD). The goal is to see which one reduces fat in the liver more effectively. Participants will be followed for a period to measure changes in liver fat using imaging.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- essential phospholipid and betaine HCL/L-glutamic acid
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple supplement option to help control fatty liver disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with no results yet. The supplements may not reduce liver fat better than each other, and long-term benefits are unknown.

Who is studied
* After obtaining the appropriate consents, data pertaining to clinical history (name, age, sex, residence, occupation, co-morbidities… diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, special habits; such as alcohol intake). * Imaging techniques, such as ultrasonography (US), fibroscan with CAP and/or computed topography (CT) and /or MRI. * Blood samples will be collected for liver function tests (albumin, alanine aminotransferase \[ALT\], aspartate aminotransferase \[AST\], blood sugar, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, total bilirubin), lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL) and CRP. * Six measurements will be obtained (sex, age, height, weight, body mass index, and abdominal girth, waist circumference). Calculation of fatty liver index, (FLI) will be done. The fatty liver index (FLI), is an algorithm based on waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride, and gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT). Score varies from zero to100.
